James Taylor, Gas Station Shooting, Detroit MI, 2022

DETROIT, MI – A brazen daylight attack at a Detroit gas station has landed 27-year-old James Taylor of Detroit facing serious federal firearm charges, authorities announced Wednesday. Taylor is accused of opening fire on the driver of another vehicle before stealing it, all while already under court-ordered tether for a separate felony offense.

The incident unfolded on April 25, 2022, near Livernois and Waverly Street. Surveillance footage, detailed in a federal affidavit, allegedly shows Taylor firing shots at another driver. After the victim fled his vehicle, Taylor reportedly circled the gas station multiple times, apparently searching for him, before simply driving off in the stolen car. Miraculously, no one was injured in the chaotic scene.

U.S. Attorney Dawn N. Ison minced no words, calling the behavior “shocking” and expressing relief that the incident didn’t escalate to a fatality. “We will not tolerate it any longer,” Ison stated. She emphasized the close collaboration between her office, the ATF, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Detroit Police Department to remove the most dangerous individuals from the streets.

Taylor has been formally indicted on two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and one count of felon in possession of ammunition. Each charge carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years imprisonment. He was ordered detained pending trial, with the case assigned to U.S. District Court Judge Robert H. Cleland. Acting Special Agent in Charge Craig Kailimai of the ATF highlighted the agency’s focus on “crime gun intelligence” to identify and remove violent criminals.

This case is part of the United States Attorney’s Office’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, a Department of Justice program aimed at reducing violent crime through focused enforcement and community partnerships. The strategy targets the most violent offenders while also investing in prevention and reentry programs. Authorities stressed that an indictment is merely an accusation, and Taylor is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The investigation was conducted by the ATF with assistance from the Detroit Police Department, and the prosecution will be handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys assigned to the Violent and Organized Crime Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it moves through the federal court system.
