New York Attorney General Letitia James has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for what she claims is an illegal cancellation of millions in National Institutes of Health (NIH) research grants. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, targets the termination of funds allocated for projects on diversity, equity, and inclusion, LGBTQ+ health, and vaccine hesitancy.
James asserts that the administration’s move to terminate these grant funding programs is an attack on science, public health, and medical innovation. She argues that millions of Americans rely on these research institutions for treatments and cures against devastating diseases, and that cutting these funds endangers lives and livelihoods.
The NIH, the world’s largest public funder of medical research, has historically been a beacon of biomedical advancements and global health leadership. However, the lawsuit argues that the Trump administration’s actions have disrupted this momentum, threatening to erode the United States’ position as a leader in life sciences.
Since March, the NIH has notified researchers that their grant funding is being withdrawn due to non-alignment with agency priorities, without giving specific reasons. The lawsuit claims these terminations are arbitrary and have caused significant damage to ongoing research efforts across the nation.
In New York alone, over $4.5 million in research grants at the State University of New York (SUNY) have been terminated. The lawsuit seeks to restore these critical funds, emphasizing that the American public deserves better than politics trumping medical progress.
