James Wilson, 36, of Pitt County, North Carolina, launched a violent attack on federal prison staff at USP Florence in Colorado, punching an officer repeatedly and brandishing a homemade shank during a chaotic confrontation on January 2, 2017. Already serving multiple federal sentences, Wilson added 46 more months behind bars after pleading guilty to assaulting and resisting a federal employee.
The assault unfolded when correctional officers ordered Wilson to stop and submit to a routine pat search. He ignored commands, turned, and bolted down the corridor. As he fled, a correctional officer spotted a weapon in Wilson’s hand — a crude but deadly cell-made shank, capable of piercing flesh and fabric alike.
Wilson was tackled after a brief struggle, but the violence didn’t end there. On the ground, he continued to resist, driving multiple punches into the chest of one officer. The officer’s protective vest showed deep indentations from the shank, and his polo shirt had at least one puncture hole over the left breast — evidence of how close the blade came to causing irreversible harm.
U.S. District Court Judge William J. Martínez handed down the 46-month sentence on March 9, 2018, ordering it to run consecutively to Wilson’s existing federal terms. He also imposed three years of supervised release following completion of the prison term.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Special Investigative Service of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Prosecution was led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Juan G. Villaseñor and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Clay C. Cook, both of the District of Colorado.
Wilson’s conviction underscores the dangers correctional officers face daily, even from inmates already locked away. At USP Florence — one of the most secure federal penitentiaries in the country — violence behind bars remains a brutal reality. This time, body armor saved a life. Next time, luck may not hold.
