Alex Mercado, Heroin Trafficking Conspiracy, New York 2024

Alex Mercado, 40, of Jamestown, NY, is headed to federal prison for his role in a sprawling heroin distribution ring that flooded Western New York with deadly narcotics. Mercado was sentenced to 120 months behind bars after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute one kilogram or more of heroin, announced U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr.

U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara handed down the sentence following Mercado’s conviction, which stems from his central role in the Sigfredo Martinez drug organization. From early 2016, Mercado ran the group’s “night shift,” handling bulk deliveries of heroin and overseeing distribution to lower-level dealers and users. Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura A. Higgins detailed how Mercado received hundreds of bundles of heroin every few days, processed them, and laundered the cash back to Martinez.

Mercado operated in tandem with co-defendant Bryan Ferrer-Vazquez, who managed daytime operations. Court records show Mercado directed Ferrer-Vazquez to deliver heroin to specific buyers and collected the proceeds on behalf of the cartel. The pair helped repackage kilogram quantities for street-level sale, fueling addiction and violence across Chautauqua County.

Federal agents closed in after conducting four controlled heroin buys with Mercado between November 3, 2016, and March 2, 2017. On April 6, 2017, DEA and local task force officers raided multiple locations, including Ferrer-Vazquez’s home at 385 Buffalo Street and Martinez’s residence at 32 Duquesne Street. Ledgers, cash, and drug records were seized, exposing the operation’s scale.

At Mercado’s home on 1083 North Main Street in Jamestown, authorities recovered approximately 10 ounces of marijuana and several Suboxone strips—evidence of broader narcotics involvement. Despite no heroin found at his residence, the paper trail and testimony sealed his fate.

Ferrer-Vazquez has already been convicted and awaits sentencing. Sigfredo Martinez remains at large, with federal charges pending. The investigation was led by the DEA’s New York Field Division under Special Agent-in-Charge James J. Hunt, in coordination with the Jamestown Police Department and the Southern Tier Regional Drug Task Force. The case underscores the federal crackdown on mid-level distributors feeding America’s opioid crisis.
