ALBANY, NEW YORK — Dr. Myra Mabry, a 48-year-old osteopathic physician from Catskill, New York, was taken into federal custody today on charges of funneling powerful opioids through sham prescriptions—a scheme that spanned nearly two years and flooded Greene County with highly addictive painkillers.
Federal prosecutors allege Mabry distributed controlled substances far outside the boundaries of medical practice, authorizing approximately 51 prescriptions for oxycodone between May 2015 and January 2017. According to the criminal complaint, a co-conspirator picked up every single dose at local pharmacies—no patient exams, no charts, no legitimate medical justification.
But the trafficking didn’t stop there. Between November 2015 and June 2017, Mabry allegedly wrote another 44 prescriptions—this time for oxycodone and hydromorphone—under the name of a second individual. Records show Mabry herself filled and collected those drugs at a Greene County pharmacy, raising red flags about personal use or street-level distribution.
The case, jointly announced by U.S. Attorney Grant C. Jaquith, DEA Special Agent in Charge James J. Hunt, and NYS Department of Health’s Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement Director Joshua Vinciguerra, highlights the continued infiltration of the opioid epidemic into trusted medical roles. Mabry’s license to heal became a pipeline for addiction.
Appearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Daniel J. Stewart in Albany, Mabry was ordered held without bond pending a detention hearing scheduled for Monday, March 12. The charges against her carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison, a minimum of 3 years of supervised release post-incarceration, and a $1 million fine. Sentencing, if convicted, will be determined by statutory mandates, the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, and judicial discretion.
The investigation was led by the DEA and the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement, with support from the Catskill Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Wayne A. Myers is prosecuting the case. The complaint outlines a pattern of abuse that eroded public trust—one prescription at a time.
