Cleveland Man Convicted of Fentanyl Sales

A tragic tale of addiction and loss has come to a close in Cleveland, Ohio. Robert J. Johnson, a 27-year-old local man, pleaded guilty to distributing a fatal dose of fentanyl that took the life of a woman.

According to court documents, Johnson’s crimes date back to August 25 and 27, 2015. On August 25, Johnson sold fentanyl that resulted in the death of a woman. He was charged with two counts of distribution of fentanyl, a charge he has now pleaded guilty to.

U.S. Attorney Carole S. Rendon expressed her outrage over the proliferation of fentanyl abuse in the community. ‘Fentanyl abuse has caused an unprecedented wave of overdose deaths in our community,’ Rendon said. ‘The only way we can stem this tide is with a comprehensive approach focused on prevention, treatment, prescribing practices and enforcement. And on the enforcement side, we will continue to aggressively prosecute those who continue to peddle this poison in our community.’

Johnson is scheduled to be sentenced on June 1. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Vasile Katsaros and Matthew J. Cronin, following an investigation by the Cleveland Division of Police, with assistance from the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Cleveland community can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that one of the individuals responsible for their loved one’s death will be held accountable. However, the question remains: how many more must suffer before the tide of fentanyl abuse is turned?

As the city of Cleveland continues to grapple with the opioid epidemic, it is clear that a multifaceted approach is needed to combat this scourge. Prevention, treatment, and enforcement must be the pillars upon which our strategy is built.
