Kansas City woman Janee C. Rosenthal has been sentenced to three years and two months in federal prison without parole for orchestrating a massive embezzlement scheme that stole over $1 million from her employer.
Rosenthal, 56, was sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge Greg Kays on April 13, 2018 after pleading guilty to two counts of mail fraud and two counts of wire fraud on September 22, 2017.
The scheme, which lasted for approximately nine years from June 2007 to May 2016, saw Rosenthal embezzle $1,097,448 from Firestone Optics, Inc., a wholesaler of contact lenses located in Kansas City, Missouri.
Rosenthal, who worked as a controller and later as a division director for Firestone Optics, used the stolen funds to pay down balances on her personal credit card account, covering expenses such as travel, dining, house expenses, clothing, entertainment, utilities, vehicle and fuel expenses, health and cosmetics, groceries, taxes, computer and electronics, jewelry, and pet expenses.
She issued and signed checks drawn on the company’s bank account and made payable to her personal credit card account, as well as made wire fund transfers from the company’s bank account to her personal credit card account for personal goods and services that had been charged on her credit card.
Rosenthal has yet to make a single payment towards the amount she owes her victims nor has she offered an apology to them, according to court documents.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rudolph R. Rhodes IV and investigated by the FBI.
