Martinsburg Man Admits to Cocaine Distribution Charge

MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – A local man has taken responsibility for his role in a cocaine distribution scheme in Berkeley County. According to United States Attorney Bill Powell, Jarod Arthur Blakney, also known as ‘Papi,’ has admitted to one count of ‘Distribution of Cocaine Base.’

Blakney, 28, of Martinsburg, pleaded guilty to the charge, which stems from an incident that took place in June of 2017. The ‘Distribution of Cocaine Base’ charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years incarceration and a fine of up to $1,000,000.

The Federal Sentencing Guidelines will play a crucial role in determining the actual sentence imposed upon Blakney. This will depend on the seriousness of the offenses and any prior criminal history the defendant may have.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Omps-Botteicher is leading the prosecution of the case on behalf of the government. The Eastern Panhandle Drug & Violent Crimes Task Force, a HIDTA-funded initiative, investigated the matter.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Trumble presided over the proceedings. Blakney faces a significant amount of time in prison and a substantial fine if convicted.

The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle against illicit substances and the consequences of engaging in such activities. The efforts of law enforcement agencies and prosecutors continue to disrupt and dismantle these operations.

In this instance, the defendant’s admission of guilt has brought the matter to a close. The court will now proceed to determine the appropriate sentence for Blakney’s actions.
