Hartford, Connecticut – In a shocking turn of events, Jason Barber, a 40-year-old resident of Hartford, has pleaded guilty to a federal gun charge in a local court. According to sources, Barber’s guilty plea stems from his unlawful possession of a firearm as a felon.
The case against Barber began on March 2, 2022, when law enforcement received information that Barber was streaming live on Facebook and showing off a loaded pistol magazine. Officers located Barber, who was seated in a vehicle, and followed him into a package store on Barbour Street. During the encounter, officers retrieved a Kahr Arms P45 handgun from Barber’s coat pocket, which contained a magazine with five rounds of .45 caliber ammunition.
Barber’s criminal history is extensive, with state felony convictions for firearm, robbery, drug, and escape offenses. As a result, it is a violation of federal law for him to possess a firearm or ammunition that has moved in interstate or foreign commerce.
At sentencing, Barber faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 15 years. He has been released on a $100,000 bond, pending further proceedings.
The investigation into Barber’s activities was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Hartford Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Patricia Stolfi Collins is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing gun violence and other violent crime. The PSN program brings together law enforcement agencies and community organizations to make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
As part of the PSN initiative, the Justice Department has launched a violent crime reduction strategy, which focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
