Clarksburg Man Sentenced for Unlawful Firearm Possession
CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – Jason Garcia Cano, a 42-year-old resident of Clarksburg, West Virginia, has been sentenced to 27 months incarceration for a firearm charge, United States Attorney Bill Powell announced.
According to the indictment, Cano pled guilty to one count of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm in October 2017. This conviction stems from Cano’s admission to possessing a .22 caliber revolver in Harrison County in October 2016.
Cano’s prior conviction of a felony in the 426th District Court in Bell County, Texas, rendered him ineligible to possess a firearm. His unlawful possession of the firearm in West Virginia led to the federal charges.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Traci M. Cook prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Greater Harrison Drug and Violent Crime Task Force, a HIDTA-funded initiative, investigated the case.
Sentencing took place in the United States District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia before Senior U.S. District Judge Irene M. Keeley.
The case is a stark reminder of the consequences of violating federal firearms laws. Cano’s sentence serves as a warning to those who would similarly disregard the law.
