U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart Honors Fallen Heroes in W.Va.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – In a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement, United States Attorney Mike Stuart joined forces with Governor James ‘Jim’ Justice, II to honor fallen heroes of law enforcement and commemorate National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.

The events, which kicked off on April 12, 2018, at the Robert C. Byrd United States Courthouse, brought together federal, state, and local law enforcement, as well as advocates of crime victims’ rights. The ceremony, aptly titled ‘Back the Blue: Law Enforcement’s Contributions to Crime Victims and Service,’ aimed to raise awareness about the rights, protections, and services available to crime victims in West Virginia.

As part of the ceremony, the U.S. Attorney and the West Virginia Fraternal Order of Police unveiled a statewide tribute to law enforcement, paying tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The event also saw the unveiling of a statewide tribute to our men and women in blue.

West Virginia Governor James ‘Jim’ Justice, II issued a Proclamation ordering a statewide moment of silence on April 13 at noon, which was observed in conjunction with the nationwide observance of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart also called for all houses of worship to toll their bells in honor of the fallen heroes.

The 18th Annual Operation Reach Out event, a collaborative effort between federal, state, and local agencies and organizations, aimed to raise awareness about the rights, protections, and services available to crime victims in West Virginia. The event was held in conjunction with the nationwide observance of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, which runs from April 8 to April 14, 2018.

The ceremony was followed by a Walk/Run for Justice on Friday, April 13, 2018, at Haddad Riverfront Park in Charleston. The event, which began at 11:00 a.m., saw registration, a pre-race ceremony, and a moment of silence at noon, followed by the walk/run at 12:00 p.m. The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of supporting law enforcement and crime victims’ rights.
