Federal inmate Dwight Foster, 50, was sentenced to 78 months in prison for assaulting a correctional officer at the United States Penitentiary Hazelton in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia.
A jury found Foster guilty of assault of a correctional officer involving physical contact and possession of a weapon after a two-day trial in October 2023.
According to court documents and statements made in court, during a search of Foster’s cell, officers found a prison-made weapon. When a correctional officer attempted to seize the object, Foster struck the officer with his fist.
Foster will serve three years of supervised release once his prison sentence is complete, bringing the total punishment to nearly six and a half years.
The Bureau of Prisons investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Brandon Flower and Christie Utt on behalf of the government.
Chief U.S. District Judge Thomas S. Kleeh presided over the case, handing down the sentence in accordance with the jury’s guilty verdict.
Foster’s conviction serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by correctional officers every day, and the need for continued vigilance in maintaining order within our nation’s prisons.
