Defendant Sentenced for Threats Against the President
Orlando, Florida – In a shocking turn of events, 40-year-old Jason Lynn Gay has pleaded guilty to making threats against the President of the United States. The maximum penalty for this crime is a 5-year stint in federal prison, and Gay’s sentencing date has yet to be set.
According to court documents, on May 29, 2013, Gay mailed a letter to the United States Courthouse in Orlando, threatening to assault and murder an FBI agent. He also threatened to take the life of and inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States of America, as well as ‘blow up’ the federal courthouse.
On May 31, 2013, a clerk at the courthouse in Orlando received, opened, and read the letter. Federal agents then interviewed Gay on June 3, 2013, and again on January 16, 2014, regarding the threats he made in the letter. In these interviews, Gay acknowledged writing the letter and reaffirmed his desire to kill the President.
This case was investigated by the United States Secret Service, with Assistant United States Attorney Andrew C. Searle leading the prosecution. Gay was indicted on February 12, 2014, and has since pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him.
As the nation grapples with the increasing threat of violence against public officials, this case serves as a stark reminder of the gravity of such crimes. The United States Attorney’s Office is committed to bringing those who commit such crimes to justice, and we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of our citizens.
