Jason Pantone Arrested for Mailing Suspicious White Powder
A 34-year-old man from Hyde Park, New York, was arrested and charged with mailing envelopes containing suspicious white powder to federal offices in New York and Connecticut.
According to a federal complaint, Jason Pantone, 34, of Hyde Park, used the U.S. mail to send envelopes containing white powder to locations in New York and Connecticut.
Each envelope contained a typed note that said ‘ANTHRAX’ and was addressed to various federal offices in the two states.
The investigation, which involved multiple agencies, including the FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Social Security Administration, and New York State Police, found that Pantone mailed envelopes to the Social Security Administration Offices in Plattsburgh, Binghamton, Utica, West Nyack, White Plains, New York, as well as offices in Hartford and Torrington, Connecticut.
The complaint alleges that Pantone mailed the envelopes between February 2019 and the present.
Pantone was arrested on an unspecified date and appeared in federal court in Albany, New York, on an unspecified date. He was charged with conveying false information and hoax, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a one-year term of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000.
The charge in the complaint is merely an accusation, and Pantone is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
