A devastating case of fentanyl overdose has ended in a 20-year prison sentence for Jason Winckler, 44, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The sentencing, which took place on May 6, 2024, is a stark reminder of the dangers of the illicit drug trade.

Winckler was convicted of Distribution of a Controlled Substance Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, a charge that carries severe penalties. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Winckler distributed a pill containing fentanyl to one of his drug customers, who then gave it to his girlfriend. The girlfriend ingested the pill and experienced a near-fatal overdose.

The incident occurred on or about March 17, 2022, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. When police arrived on the scene, they found the victim unconscious, not breathing, and turning blue. Fortunately, officers were able to revive the victim after administering three doses of Narcan.

Winckler pleaded guilty to the charges on February 21, 2024, and was subsequently sentenced to 20 years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The case was investigated by the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Sioux Falls Area Drug Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizbeth Ebert prosecuted the case, which was heard by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier.
