Javares Hudson, Machine Gun Possession, Illinois 2022

PEORIA, IL – Javares Hudson, 22, of Bloomington, Illinois, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 33 months for illegally possessing a “Glock Switch” – a deadly device that transforms a standard Glock pistol into a fully automatic machine gun. U.S. District Judge James E. Shadid handed down the sentence Thursday, adding a three-year term of supervised release to follow Hudson’s incarceration. No parole exists in the federal system.

The case unfolded after Hudson, wounded by a gunshot, sought treatment at a local hospital on January 23, 2022. Bloomington Police, responding to reports of the shooting outside a nightclub, arrived at the same time, intending to question Hudson and conduct a gunshot residue test. But hospital staff quickly discovered something far more concerning: a small plastic baggie lodged in Hudson’s mouth. After a struggle, Hudson spat out the baggie, revealing the illegal conversion device. Federal authorities classify these “Glock Conversion Devices” as machine guns.

Hudson was initially arrested in McLean County and held in state custody until federal charges were filed. A grand jury returned an indictment in February 2022, and Hudson ultimately pleaded guilty in September of the same year. He’s been held by the U.S. Marshals Service ever since.

Possessing a machine gun carries a hefty penalty: up to 10 years in prison, followed by up to three years of supervised release. Hudson also faces a potential fine of up to $250,000. While he received a lesser sentence, the case underscores the ATF’s commitment to cracking down on the proliferation of these dangerous devices.

The investigation was a collaborative effort, involving the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Bloomington Police Department, and the Peoria Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ronald L. Hanna led the prosecution. This case is part of the Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a nationwide initiative focused on reducing violent crime and gun violence through partnerships between law enforcement and local communities.

PSN, relaunched in 2021, emphasizes building trust with communities, supporting violence prevention programs, and strategically prioritizing enforcement efforts. The Hudson case exemplifies this strategy, aiming to remove illegal weapons from the streets and hold those responsible accountable. The ATF’s Chicago Field Division oversaw the investigation.
