Javier Valtierra, Illegal Firearm, Minneapolis MN, 2023

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – A routine traffic stop turned into a weapons and narcotics bust when Minneapolis police discovered a loaded handgun and illegal drugs on 31-year-old Javier Juan Valtierra. Valtierra pleaded guilty yesterday to one count of possessing a firearm as a felon in U.S. District Court, facing an as-yet unscheduled sentencing hearing.

The incident unfolded July 18, 2022, when officers responded to a call regarding an unconscious individual inside a vehicle. Upon arrival, they found Valtierra and another person unresponsive. A search of Valtierra revealed a Smith & Wesson, M&P Bodyguard 380, .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol tucked into his pocket. It wasn’t just the gun; officers also recovered baggies containing cocaine and methamphetamine from Valtierra and within the vehicle itself.

Federal prosecutors, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly A. Svendsen, successfully secured the guilty plea. Valtierra’s prior felony conviction automatically disqualifies him from legally owning a firearm. The details of his previous conviction have not been released, but it’s enough to land him back in the system.

The case was a joint operation between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Minneapolis Police Department. The ATF’s involvement signals the agency’s continued focus on stemming the flow of illegal firearms onto Minneapolis streets. The collaboration highlights the ongoing efforts to tackle both gun crime and the intertwined issue of drug trafficking.

While the sentencing date remains undetermined, legal experts suggest Valtierra could face a significant prison term. Federal guidelines for firearm offenses, particularly for repeat offenders, are often strict. The additional drug charges could also factor into the judge’s final decision.

U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger announced the guilty plea, stating it represents another step in the ongoing fight against violent crime in Minneapolis. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing when it is announced. This isn’t just about a gun; it’s about a pattern of behavior that puts the community at risk.
