Javon Kennedy, Possession with Intent to Distribute Controlled Substance, Indiana 2017

A Merrillville man has been sentenced to 41 months in prison for his role in a cocaine trafficking operation.

Javon Kennedy, 43, was sentenced by District Court Senior Judge James T. Moody on December 7, 2017, for possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.

The case began on January 24, 2017, when Kennedy was stopped for speeding in Hobart, Indiana. According to investigators, the officer noticed Kennedy’s heavy breathing and shaking hands as he approached the vehicle.

Upon searching the vehicle, officers recovered 25 grams of cocaine from Kennedy and his female passenger.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s GRIT team in cooperation with the Hobart Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Thomas Mahoney prosecuted the case.

Kennedy was sentenced to 41 months in prison followed by 2 years of supervised release.

This is a stark reminder of the dangers of cocaine trafficking and the consequences of being caught.
