NEW ORLEANS Woman Indicted for Theft of Mail
A 29-year-old New Orleans woman has been indicted for stealing a mail package entrusted to her while performing her duties as a postal worker.
Javonte Richard, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was indicted on December 16, 2021, for theft of mail in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1709, according to U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans.
According to the indictment, on November 14, 2019, Richard removed a package entrusted to her while performing her assigned duties as an employee of the United States Postal Service.
If convicted, Richard faces a maximum penalty of up to five (5) years imprisonment, followed by up to three (3) years of supervised release, a $250,000 fine, and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.
U.S. Attorney Evans reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
United States Attorney Evans praised the work of the United States Postal Inspection Service, Office of the Inspector General in investigating this matter. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jon Maestri is in charge of the prosecution.
Richard’s case is currently ongoing, and it is unclear when a trial will be scheduled. However, if convicted, Richard will face a significant sentence, including imprisonment and a substantial fine.
The indictment serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability in public service. Postal workers are entrusted with the responsibility of delivering mail and packages, and any theft or misconduct can have serious consequences.
