SCRANTON – Kingston man Jayson Thompson, age 31, was sentenced to a time served period of incarceration for being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
On October 26, 2022, U.S. District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani handed down the sentence to Thompson, who had been in custody since his arrest on September 10, 2021. Thompson had previously admitted to being in possession of a loaded Taurus G2S .40 caliber pistol in Luzerne County on September 10, 2021.
Thompson, a convicted felon, knew that he was not allowed to possess a firearm. The Taurus pistol had also been shipped and transported in interstate commerce, which is a federal offense. The matter was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Kingston Police Department, and the Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office.
Assistant U.S. Attorney James M. Buchanan prosecuted the case, which is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN). The program aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and the communities they serve. PSN is based on four core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results.
Thompson’s case is a reminder of the importance of gun safety and the consequences of violating federal firearms laws. As part of his sentence, Thompson will serve a time served period of incarceration, which is 14 months. He will also be subject to other conditions, including supervision by the U.S. Probation Office.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania is committed to ensuring public safety and upholding the law. This case is a testament to the office’s dedication to reducing violent crime and making our communities safer for everyone.
In related news, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania has launched a violent crime reduction strategy to strengthen PSN. The strategy focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results.
