JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, WA – Jimmy Anthony Indarte, 28, of North Carolina, will spend the next four years behind bars for a horrifying act of violence against his wife on Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM). U.S. Attorney Brian T. Moran announced the sentencing today, a paltry sum for a crime described by the judge as “one of the most serious crimes that a person can commit.” Indarte received eight years of supervised release following his prison term.
The brutal assault unfolded in August 2017, while the couple navigated a contentious divorce. The split stemmed, in part, from the wife discovering Indarte’s sickening cruelty: the torture and intentional killing of multiple puppies they had adopted. Indarte initially lied, claiming the animals died accidentally. But the horror didn’t end there. The victim discovered disturbing videos on Indarte’s phone – recordings of him raping her while she was unconscious, induced by medication. When confronted, Indarte escalated the violence, choking her into unconsciousness *again* before she managed to call 9-1-1.
Even after she regained consciousness and contacted authorities, Indarte’s rampage continued. He pursued his wife through their home wielding a large butcher knife, all while their three-year-old son was present. Thankfully, military police intervened, rescuing the victim from a potentially fatal situation. The fact that this unfolded with a child present is a chilling detail that underscores the depravity of Indarte’s actions.
But the abuse didn’t stop with the physical assault. Following a no-contact order, Indarte relentlessly attempted to reach his former spouse, violating the court’s protection. He even fabricated emails, attempting to discredit her statements to the FBI and employing threats to silence her cooperation with law enforcement. This sustained campaign of harassment demonstrates a callous disregard for the victim and a desperate attempt to evade justice.
The case landed in federal court due to the location of the crime – JBLM. Indarte was apprehended in December 2017 at his father’s residence in High Point, North Carolina, and has remained detained ever since. He initially pleaded guilty to abusive sexual contact in March 2019. A plea that, frankly, feels insufficient given the full scope of the violence he inflicted.
The investigation was a joint effort by the FBI and the Army Criminal Investigation Command (CID). Assistant United States Attorney Grady Leupold prosecuted the case. While a conviction is secured, the victim will undoubtedly carry the scars of this trauma for a lifetime.
