Violent Crime Epidemic Spreads Across America, Sessions Announces Plan to Fight Back

By: Grimy Times Staff

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has announced a series of sweeping measures aimed at tackling the rising tide of violent crime that has plagued America in recent years. At the forefront of these efforts is the reinvigoration of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program that has been widely credited with reducing violent crime in communities across the nation.

According to FBI data, violent crime rates have risen by nearly seven percent over the past two years, with homicide rates increasing by more than 20 percent. Sessions made it clear that this trend will not be tolerated, and that the Department of Justice will take bold action to reverse it.

“We cannot be complacent or hope that this is just an anomaly,” Sessions said in a statement. “We have a duty to take action.”

As part of this effort, Sessions has directed United States Attorneys to implement an enhanced violent crime reduction program that incorporates the lessons learned since Project Safe Neighborhoods was launched in 2001.

The Attorney General also announced several other initiatives aimed at reducing violent crime, including the allocation of 40 prosecutors to focus on violent crime reduction, the awarding of $98 million in COPS Hiring Grants to local law enforcement agencies, and the establishment of a Violence Reduction Response Center to provide critical training and technical assistance to state and local partners.

“Let me be clear – Project Safe Neighborhoods is not just one policy idea among many,” Sessions said. “This is the centerpiece of our crime reduction strategy.”

Sessions emphasized the importance of partnership with local communities in reducing violent crime, and pledged to work closely with state and local law enforcement agencies to achieve this goal.

In Louisiana, where the violent crime rate has risen by 15 percent over the past two years, Sessions’ announcement has been welcomed by law enforcement officials.

“We are grateful for the Attorney General’s commitment to addressing the violent crime epidemic in our state,” said a spokesperson for the Louisiana State Police. “We look forward to working closely with the Department of Justice to reduce violent crime and make our communities safer for everyone.”
