Carjacking Defendant Receives 102-Month Sentence
Greenbelt, Maryland – A carjacking defendant was sentenced to 102 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for his role in a carjacking and being a felon in possession of a gun.
U.S. District Judge Paul W. Grimm handed down the sentence to Jeffrey Carl Franklin, age 29, of Greenbelt, Maryland. Franklin was found guilty of carjacking and being a felon in possession of a gun, according to the plea agreement.
On February 8, 2012, Franklin, along with his co-conspirators David Peebles and another individual, drove to the Manchester Road area of Silver Spring, Maryland. They spotted a victim parking a 2008 Infiniti and, at gunpoint, demanded the keys to the car. The victim’s keys were taken, and the co-conspirators drove away in the Infiniti.
On March 2, 2012, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Franklin’s residence in Greenbelt, Maryland. A .380 caliber pistol loaded with six rounds of ammunition was seized, and Franklin knew he was prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition due to a previous felony conviction.
Franklin’s co-conspirators, David Peebles and Samuel Damien Bynum, received sentences of eight years and 207 months in prison, respectively, for their roles in the conspiracy.
U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein commended the FBI, Prince George’s County, Montgomery County, Takoma Park, Metro Transit, Alexandria, and Metropolitan Police Departments, as well as the Prince George’s County and Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Offices, and the Maryland Attorney General’s Office, for their work in the investigation. Rosenstein also thanked Assistant United States Attorneys Thomas M. Sullivan and William D. Moomau, and Special Assistant Matthew L. Paeffgen, who prosecuted the case.
