Criminals in the Hawkeye State are facing justice, and we’ve got the story.
A Lake City man is headed to federal prison after a guilty plea to possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. Jeffrey Carothers, 52, was sentenced to 27 months’ imprisonment and must serve a 2-year term of supervised release.
According to court documents, Carothers was previously convicted of receiving stolen property in the Superior Court for the State of California in and for the county of Plumas, on or about November 17, 1995. This conviction prohibited him from possessing guns.
However, in April or May 2019, Carothers possessed a stolen 9mm pistol and sold it to another person he knew to be prohibited from possessing a firearm. The defendant also admitted to being an illegal user of methamphetamine and trading it for guns on multiple occasions, using his home as a ‘clearing house’ of stolen property.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Patrick T. Greenwood and was investigated by the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Lake City Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Carothers’ sentence was handed down by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand in federal court in Sioux City on June 28, 2021. This is a stark reminder that those who break the law will face consequences.
