Waterloo Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for Theft of a Firearm

A 19-year-old Waterloo man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for stealing a semiautomatic firearm from Fleet Farm in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Dalyn Jamil Culp, of Waterloo, Iowa, pleaded guilty to theft of a firearm from a federal firearms licensee on December 11, 2020.

According to court documents, Culp stole a Smith and Wesson 9mm pistol from Fleet Farm on February 27, 2020, and fled the scene. Law enforcement was able to find evidence on Culp’s cell phone that linked him to the crime, including a video of the firearm and a photograph of the Fleet Farm barcode attached to the stolen gun.

Culp was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams. He was ordered to serve 60 months’ imprisonment, pay a $100 fine, and make restitution to Fleet Farm. He will also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime by focusing enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partnering with locally based prevention and reentry programs.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Elizabeth Dupuich and investigated by the Cedar Falls Police Department, the Waterloo Police Department, and the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Culp is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. The case file number is 20-CR-2041-CJW.
