Bronx Men Charged in Robbery and Shooting of Off-Duty Police Officer

GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Four men from the Bronx have been arrested and charged in connection with the robbery and shooting of an off-duty police officer in the Bronx. The suspects, Jeffrey Okine, Marquis Daniels, Rayshaun Jones, and Tyquez Harrell, were taken into federal custody on Rikers Island, where they were being held since January 4, 2013, on state charges for these offenses.

According to the allegations in the Complaint unsealed today in Manhattan federal court and other documents in the public record, the four men robbed employees at a variety of commercial establishments in the Bronx, including a used car dealership on January 3, 2013. During the robbery, Okine and Harrell posed as potential buyers and took out a gun, ordering the employees to empty their pockets. Okine got into a skirmish with the off-duty police officer and shot him in the leg.

The suspects have been charged with one count of Hobbs Act robbery conspiracy, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, and one count of using, possessing, and discharging a firearm in relation to a crime of violence, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara praised the ATF and the NYPD for their work in the investigation, stating that the suspects will now have to answer for their conduct. ATF Special Agent-in-Charge Joseph Anarumo, Jr. said that gun violence in the community is unacceptable and that the suspects will be punished severely under federal law.

The four defendants will be presented in Manhattan federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald L. Ellis this afternoon.
