Baltimore, Maryland – A former postal service employee has been handed a 20-month sentence for stealing and embezzling over 20,000 pieces of mail. Jeffrey L. Shipley, 48, from Millersville, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Ellen L. Hollander to serve his term followed by three years of supervised release.
Shipley’s misdeeds began in 2005 and continued until March 10, 2014. During this period, he worked as a letter carrier at various locations across Maryland. According to the plea agreement, Shipley not only stole mail from his assigned route but also pilfered items directly from the Catonsville Carrier Annex, including Postal Service property worth over $500.
The United States Attorney for the District of Maryland, Rod J. Rosenstein, announced the sentence, which also included an order for Shipley to pay $19,358.75 in restitution.
In a significant bust on March 10, 2014, agents searched Shipley’s residence and a rented storage facility, seizing a trove of stolen mail that included gift cards, credit cards, prescription bottles, checks, passports, and jewelry. The total loss from this scheme exceeded $10,000, affecting over 250 victims.
Special Agent in Charge Paul Bowman of the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General praised the agency’s efforts in the investigation, while Rosenstein acknowledged Assistant U.S. Attorney Judson T. Mihok’s role in bringing Shipley to justice.
