Jennifer Leyva, Identity Theft, Kansas 2024

A 35-year-old woman from Peru, Jennifer Leyva, has been charged with 10 counts of identity theft and document fraud in federal court in Wichita, Kansas.

Leyva, who entered the United States in 2005 on a visitor’s visa and stayed, allegedly used at least three different identities to obtain jobs at several Wichita-area businesses.

The investigation, conducted by agents of the Kansas Department of Labor and Homeland Security Investigations, led to Leyva’s arrest on Tuesday.

Leyva is scheduled to make an initial court appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Gwynne E. Birzer on Wednesday.

A federal grand jury indicted Leyva on March 16 on the 10 counts, including two counts of aggravated identity theft, two counts of identity document fraud, two counts of lying on an I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form, and four counts of misuse of a Social Security number.

The charges relate to Leyva’s employment at health care-related businesses in Wichita.

If convicted, Leyva faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each count.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Brent Anderson is prosecuting the case, which emphasizes that defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
