Jennifer Saldana, Conspiracy to Distribute Meth, Texas 2020

In a major blow to the Coastal Bend’s illicit methamphetamine trade, Jennifer Saldana has been sentenced to federal prison for her role in a conspiracy to distribute the deadly drug. The 38-year-old woman, a resident of the Coastal Bend, was arrested on May 30, 2019, after a routine stop by Border Patrol agents at the Falfurrias checkpoint.

According to court documents, Saldana and her accomplice, Willie James Sorrell III, traveled from McAllen to the Corpus Christi area on a Greyhound bus. It was there that authorities discovered a backpack near Sorrell’s feet containing nearly 250 grams of methamphetamine and a firearm.

The investigation, conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Customs and Border Protection, and the Texas Department of Public Safety, revealed that Saldana and Sorrell had traveled from Corpus Christi to the Rio Grande Valley to obtain distribution amounts of meth.

On June 17, 2020, Saldana pleaded guilty to the conspiracy charge, and on [sentencing date], U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos sentenced her to serve an 84-month sentence, immediately followed by five years of supervised release.

This case serves as a reminder of the DEA’s ongoing efforts to disrupt and dismantle the methamphetamine trafficking trade in the Coastal Bend. The investigation was a collaborative effort between multiple agencies, demonstrating the importance of interagency cooperation in combating the illicit drug trade.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Reid Manning prosecuted the case, securing a significant victory for the people of Texas. Saldana is currently in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.

Willie James Sorrell III, Saldana’s accomplice, was previously sentenced to more than 10 years in federal prison. The case highlights the severity of the consequences for those involved in the methamphetamine trade and serves as a warning to others who would engage in similar activities.
