Defendant Faces Up to 20 Years in Prison for Methamphetamine Trafficking

A Rapid City man has been indicted for possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, a serious offense that carries a significant prison sentence. Jonah Burning Breast, a/k/a Jonah Jarrett Burning Breast, a/k/a Jonah Jared Burning Breast, a/k/a Jonah Jared Big Crow, age 23, was indicted on February 15, 2017, by a federal grand jury for his alleged involvement in the distribution of a controlled substance.

According to the indictment, Burning Breast knowingly and intentionally distributed a mixture or substance containing a detectable amount of methamphetamine, a Schedule II controlled substance, on or about the 2nd day of September 2016, in Todd County, South Dakota. The charges are merely accusations, and Burning Breast is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The investigation into Burning Breast’s activities is being conducted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney SaraBeth Donovan is prosecuting the case.

Burning Breast appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark Moreno on March 17, 2017, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 20 years in custody and/or a $1,000,000 fine, a lifetime of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.

Burning Breast was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial, which is set for May 2, 2017. The charges against Burning Breast are a stark reminder of the devastating impact of methamphetamine trafficking on our communities.
