Jeremiah Urias, Armed Gas Station Robbery, Kansas 2020

A brazen armed robbery shook the streets of Newton, Kansas, in February 2020, leaving residents on high alert. The getaway driver, 19-year-old Jeremiah Urias, has finally faced justice for his role in the heinous crime.

Urias was sentenced to 60 months in prison for his involvement in the armed robbery of an EZ Trip gas station in Newton, Kansas. The incident took place on February 2020, when Urias waited in the vehicle while two accomplices entered the business and demanded money from the clerk at gunpoint.

A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper spotted the vehicle after the robbery and initiated a high-speed chase. The pursuit ended when Urias’ vehicle was involved in an accident with another vehicle. Urias then fled on foot, while his accomplices remained in the vehicle and were later arrested.

Urias was eventually captured by law enforcement, bringing an end to the ordeal. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, Kansas Highway Patrol, Newton Police Department, Salina Police Department, and the Wichita Police Department (FBI Task Force Officer) investigated the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Alan Metzger prosecuted the case, securing a guilty plea from Urias in April 2021. The U.S. Attorney’s Office emphasized the importance of holding all individuals accountable for their roles in crimes, regardless of their level of involvement.

‘We want to make it clear to all persons who willingly participate in crimes that they can be subject to prosecution no matter their role,’ said Acting U.S Attorney Duston Slinkard. ‘Although the defendant may not have personally entered the business or pointed a gun at the employee, he was still responsible for participating in the robbery, and the Court held him accountable.’

Jeremiah Urias, 19, of Wichita, Kansas, pleaded guilty to one count of Robbery.

The case serves as a stark reminder that those who participate in crimes will face the consequences of their actions. Urias’ 60-month prison sentence is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement and the pursuit of justice in the community.
