A 21-year-old Buffalo man has pleaded guilty to distributing fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, in a case that highlights the ongoing struggle with opioid addiction in Western New York. Jeremy Jorge, 21, of Buffalo, NY, pleaded guilty to distribution of fentanyl before U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo.

According to court documents, Jorge sold what he marketed as heroin in exchange for sums of money between $300 and $1,300, on at least seven occasions, between December 2016 and September 2017. In total, Jorge distributed over 24 grams of fentanyl in the Buffalo community.

Jorge’s guilty plea comes after a lengthy investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge James J. Hunt, New York Field Division. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Scott S. Allen, Jr., and Wei Xiang are handling the case.

The charge of distribution of fentanyl carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $1,000,000 fine. Jorge is scheduled to be sentenced on May 15, 2018, at 9:30 a.m. before Judge Vilardo.
