Jeremy L. Cruz, Child Sex Trafficking, Ohio 2024

Elyria man Jeremy L. Cruz, 39, stands accused of crossing state lines to exploit a child, charged with transporting a 14-year-old girl from California to Ohio for unlawful sexual activity. Federal prosecutors unsealed a multi-count indictment detailing a years-long pattern of predatory behavior, including possession and movement of child sexual abuse material.

The indictment alleges that between April 13 and April 18, 2019, Cruz knowingly transported the minor in interstate commerce from California to Ohio with the intent that she engage in sexual activity. The trip, premeditated and deliberate, forms the core of one count of transportation of a minor with intent to engage in unlawful sexual activity.

In parallel charges, Cruz is accused of receiving visual depictions of real minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct from as early as January 1, 2017, through April 15, 2019. That count—receipt of child pornography—paints a picture of prolonged criminal conduct feeding off the exploitation of vulnerable children.

Adding to the severity, Cruz is also charged with transporting child pornography during the same April 2019 window when he brought the girl to Ohio. Authorities say he moved numerous illicit images across state lines, intensifying the federal nature of the crimes and the potential penalties he faces.

The case was built through a joint investigation involving the FBI’s Cleveland and Los Angeles field offices, alongside local law enforcement from Avon Lake, Elyria, Sheffield Lake, and the Santa Maria Police Department in California. Assistant United States Attorney Michael A. Sullivan is prosecuting, signaling federal prioritization of child exploitation cases.

An indictment is not a conviction. Cruz is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. If found guilty, sentencing will consider his role, criminal history, and the nature of the offenses. Statutory maximums apply, but the final judgment rests with the court after full trial proceedings.
