DENVER, CO – A 27-year-old Aurora man is facing serious federal charges after police discovered him armed inside Children’s Hospital last month. Jeremy Lavon Tate was arrested September 24th and indicted by a grand jury this week on charges of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as possession of a machinegun.
According to court documents, Aurora police responded to Children’s Hospital and took custody of Tate, finding him carrying a pistol loaded with one round in the chamber. The weapon wasn’t just a handgun; investigators quickly determined it had been fitted with an auto-convertor switch – a device that transforms a semi-automatic pistol into a fully automatic machinegun. A high-capacity magazine containing an additional 17 rounds was also found inserted into the firearm.
Adding to the severity of the charges, investigators learned that Tate is a previously convicted felon, legally barring him from owning or possessing any firearms. The combination of the illegal modifications and his criminal history paints a dangerous picture, raising questions about his intentions and how he managed to obtain the weapon. Details regarding the initial reason for police presence at the hospital have not been released.
Tate made his initial court appearance on October 6th before Magistrate Judge N. Reid Neureiter, who ordered him held without bail. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Brian Dunn, indicating the seriousness with which federal authorities are approaching this case. The US Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado is pursuing the charges aggressively.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Aurora Police Department. Both agencies are remaining tight-lipped about ongoing investigative details. This case highlights the continued flow of illegal firearms and modifications onto the streets, and the collaborative efforts needed to combat gun crime.
It’s crucial to remember that the charges contained in the indictment are allegations at this point, and Jeremy Lavon Tate is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Case number 22-cr-00301 will be closely watched as the legal proceedings unfold. Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and report on any developments.
