BUTLER COUNTY, OH – A calculated act of arson landed Farhan Jami, 29, of East Meadow, New York, a 46-month federal prison sentence. Jami flew across state lines with a dangerous payload: the materials to build and ignite an incendiary device, targeting a Butler County residence in the dead of night.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of May 16, 2023, involved Jami constructing a crude bomb using thermite, sparklers, and a ceramic pot. He then brazenly placed the device on the hood of a vehicle parked at the targeted home and ignited it. The resulting fire not only totaled the car but also scorched the side of the occupied residence, putting lives at risk.
Court documents reveal Jami’s meticulous planning. He traveled from New York to Ohio specifically to carry out the attack, transporting the thermite and sparklers on the flight. Surveillance footage captured Jami meticulously concealing his identity with a hat, surgical mask, and gloves as he deployed the device, then calmly walking away as flames erupted. He clearly intended to avoid identification.
Law enforcement’s swift response led to Jami’s apprehension near the scene. Officers found damning evidence – red residue consistent with thermite on his clothing, along with the lighter, mask, gloves, and a bag of the incendiary powder itself. This, combined with the security footage, built an airtight case against him.
Jami was indicted by a federal grand jury in June 2023 and ultimately pleaded guilty in October 2023. U.S. Attorney Kenneth L. Parker for the Southern District of Ohio and Daryl S. McCormick, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF), jointly announced the sentencing, handed down by U.S. District Judge Matthew W. McFarland. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Timothy S. Mangan and Ryan A. Keefe prosecuted the case.
The 46-month sentence serves as a stark warning: bringing destructive devices across state lines to terrorize and damage property will be met with the full force of federal law. The ATF’s Columbus Field Division played a key role in the investigation, ensuring Jami will answer for his reckless and dangerous actions. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but the damage caused and the intent to harm are undeniable.
