NEWARK, N.J. – Matthew Ozol, 39, of Jersey City, New Jersey, is facing federal charges after authorities uncovered a disturbing trove of child pornography linked to his online activity. The case, announced today by Acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba, paints a grim picture of a man allegedly involved in the darkest corners of the internet.
Ozol is charged with one count of possession of child pornography, a crime carrying a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge James B. Clark, III in Newark and was immediately detained, signaling the seriousness with which the court is treating these allegations.
The investigation began with a review of messages sent through a messaging application tied to an IP address registered to Ozol’s residence. Court documents reveal the account participated in a chat group chillingly named “Baby Rapist.” Investigators found communications referencing a desire to harm infants and exchange child pornography, culminating in the distribution of a video depicting the exploitation of children.
A subsequent search warrant executed at Ozol’s Jersey City home yielded at least 26 images and videos of child pornography, depicting infants and toddlers. This isn’t just about possessing illegal content; it’s about the devastating harm inflicted upon the victims whose images were exploited, and the continued trauma those images inflict. The details are, predictably, horrific.
The case is being prosecuted under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the escalating epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project leverages the combined resources of federal, state, and local agencies to identify, apprehend, and prosecute predators, and to rescue victims.
Homeland Security Investigations Newark, led by Special Agent in Charge Michael McCarthy, spearheaded the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Specht of the Special Prosecutions Division is handling the prosecution. Ozol is represented by Robert Ebberup, Esq., of Toms River, New Jersey. This investigation serves as a stark reminder of the hidden horrors lurking online and the relentless efforts to bring those responsible to justice. Further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
