A McLaughlin man has been held accountable for abandoning his child, leaving behind a trail of unpaid child support.
Jesse L. Brown Otter, 45, was sentenced to time served, a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, and child support restitution in the amount of $25,342.12.
Brown Otter was charged with Failure to Pay Legal Child Support after he was found to have failed to pay over $25,000 in past due child support.
The indictment states that Brown Otter was ordered by the Eighth Judicial Circuit Court, Corson County, to pay $150 per month for his minor child, commencing August 1, 1992. However, he had not made a child support payment since July 2007.
According to court documents, the total arrearage amount was $25,342.12, leaving his child without the financial support they needed.
Brown Otter pleaded guilty to the charge on February 26, 2013, and was sentenced on May 20, 2013, by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange.
This case serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of failing to pay child support. The investigation was conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General, and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas J. Wright.
