Former Postal Supervisor Sentenced for Stealing Cash from Mail
Connecticut – In a shocking case of postal corruption, Jessica Giles, 38, of West Haven, has been sentenced to two years of probation for stealing cash from the mail while working as a supervisor at the U.S. Post Office in Fairfield.
The sentencing occurred via videoconference on date not specified, but referenced as taking place pursuant to the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act). U.S. District Judge Robert N. Chatigny ordered Giles to pay a $2,400 fine and spend the first three months of her probation in home confinement.
According to court documents and statements made in court, between October 2019 and May 2020, Giles used her phone’s flashlight feature to examine the content of various envelopes. When she believed an envelope contained U.S. currency, she opened it, stole the cash, and on multiple occasions, tore up and disposed of the envelope. Surveillance video also revealed that Giles stuffed approximately 19 envelopes into her pants to remove them to a more private location for further examination.
Giles pleaded guilty to theft of mail by a postal employee on November 3, 2020. This investigation was conducted by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Konstantin Lantsman.
Individuals who believe they are a victim of mail theft may file a complaint by calling 888-USPS-OIG or by visiting https://www.uspsoig.gov/form/file-online-complaint.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of trust in our postal system. As a supervisor, Giles was entrusted with the responsibility of delivering the mail, not stealing from it.
