Jessie James Turner Jr Lands 10-Year Sentence for Gun Charges

A Selma man has been handed down a 10-year prison sentence for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Jessie James Turner Jr, 46, was found guilty in federal court of the crime, which is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

The case began in November 2019, when Selma Police were called to Turner’s apartment after he started firing a gun through the walls. Officers discovered two AR-15 assault rifles and a .40 caliber handgun in his possession.

Turner’s previous felony convictions include Criminal Mischief, 1st; Certain Persons Forbidden to Possess a Firearm; Assault, 2nd; and an additional conviction for Assault, 2nd. As a result of these convictions, Turner is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.

U.S. District Court Judge Terry F. Moorer presided over the trial and imposed the maximum 120-month sentence, finding that Turner was a danger to the community. Turner was tried by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kasee S. Heisterhagen with the assistance of AUSA George F. May.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Selma Police Department. Turner’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violating federal gun laws.
