Gulfport, MS – In a shocking turn of events, a Gulfport resident has been sentenced to over 8 years in prison for his role in a major methamphetamine trafficking operation. Jesus Ernesto Rodriguez, 36, an illegal alien from Mexico, was handed down a 103-month prison sentence by U.S. District Judge Sul Ozerden on [March 26, 2018].
The charges against Rodriguez stem from a traffic stop that took place on Interstate 10 in D’Iberville on [March 26, 2018]. A U.S. Border Patrol agent attempted to pull over the vehicle, driven by Rodriguez’s codefendant, Jason Cooper. However, Cooper failed to stop and began throwing what was later determined to be methamphetamine from the driver’s side window. The vehicle was eventually located in Ocean Springs, where Rodriguez and Cooper were found inside.
Agents located 78.2 grams of methamphetamine inside the vehicle. The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shundral H. Cole. Rodriguez pled guilty on October 15, 2018, to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
Rodriguez was also ordered to pay a $2,000 fine as part of his sentence. This is not the first time Rodriguez’s codefendant, Jason Cooper, has been involved in a methamphetamine trafficking operation. Cooper previously pled guilty and was sentenced to 233 months in prison on November 13, 2018.
