Fentanyl Trafficking Ring Busted in Texas

A 26-year-old Mexican citizen, Jesus Florencio Chaparro-Sanchez, has been sentenced to 135 months in federal prison for transporting fentanyl, a powerful narcotic 50 times more potent than heroin. The sentence was handed down by U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Erin Nealy Cox.

Chaparro-Sanchez pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute in August and admitted to transporting nearly four kilograms of Tramadol and five kilograms of fentanyl in a black Pontiac G6. The drugs were discovered by a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper who stopped the vehicle for traffic violations.

According to the investigation, Chaparro-Sanchez was offered a job by a man in Mexico to transport the drugs, which he initially believed to be cocaine. However, DEA testing revealed the substance to be a deadly mix of fentanyl and Tramadol.

The investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Texas Department of Public Safety, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Juanita Fielden prosecuting the case.

Fentanyl has been responsible for a sharp increase in opioid deaths across the U.S., with the death toll rising more than 5,000 percent in just three years. The National Institute of Health reports that the number of fentanyl-related deaths rose from around 5,500 in 2014 to almost 30,000 last year.

U.S. Attorney Nealy Cox warned that the country has ‘zero tolerance’ for those who support the distribution of dangerous drugs in America and vowed to do everything in her power to stop fentanyl’s spread across North Texas.

The DEA has also pledged to aggressively investigate and prosecute anyone involved in the illegal distribution of fentanyl in North Texas and Oklahoma.
