LAFAYETTE – A 66-year-old woman from Breaux Bridge has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for stealing over $64,000 from a New Iberia company.

Joan C. Edgar, a former office manager, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Dee D. Drell on one count of wire fraud. She will also serve three years of supervised release and pay $64,860 in restitution, as well as a $5,000 fine.

According to her guilty plea, Edgar began negotiating with the company’s sole stockholder in 2011 to buy the company. However, while still working for the company, she stole $64,860 and concealed her actions by altering company records.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) conducted the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kelly P. Uebinger prosecuted the case.

Edgar’s sentence serves as a reminder that corporate thieves will be held accountable for their actions. This case highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in business dealings.
