In a major blow to the Mexican organized crime syndicate known as the Sinaloa Cartel, Joaquin Archivaldo Guzman Loera, alias “El Chapo,” has been extradited to the United States to face criminal charges.
Guzman Loera, who led the Sinaloa Cartel, landed at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip, New York, on February 22, 2024, after being extradited from Mexico.
According to the U.S. government, Guzman Loera is charged in six separate indictments throughout the United States, with the indictment filed in the Eastern District of New York containing a provision that he must first enter the United States in that district to preserve the Eastern District of New York indictment.
The Justice Department extended its gratitude to the Government of Mexico for their cooperation and assistance in securing the extradition of Guzman Loera to the United States.
As Guzman Loera prepares for his initial appearance in U.S. District Court, additional details regarding the time and place of his appearance are forthcoming.
Guzman Loera, whose real full name is Joaquin Archivaldo Guzman Loera, faces charges related to his leadership of the Sinaloa Cartel and is currently being held in U.S. custody.
