New Orleans physician Jobie Crear, M.D., 70, has entered a guilty plea for his role in an elaborate scheme to pay and receive illegal kickbacks. The kickback scheme, which caused a significant loss to Medicare, was uncovered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Creater, who operated Comprehensive Nursing and Home Health Service, Inc. (Comprehensive), was charged with conspiring to pay recruiters to attract Medicare beneficiaries to his company. This fraudulent activity resulted in a staggering $810,556 in losses to the Medicare program.
The charges against Crear stem from a Bill of Information filed on December 12, 2016. Today’s guilty plea comes after an extensive investigation by the FBI, which has been commended by Acting U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans.
Crear now faces serious penalties for his crime. He could be sentenced to up to five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release upon completion of his sentence. Sentencing is scheduled for July 12, 2017, before U.S. District Judge Sarah S. Vance.
Assistant U. S. Attorney Patrice Harris Sullivan will be handling the prosecution of this case, ensuring that justice is served for the loss to Medicare and taxpayers alike.
The successful investigation into Crear’s criminal activity has been attributed to the diligent work of the Special Agents of the FBI. The agency’s efforts have once again highlighted the importance of their ongoing fight against healthcare fraud and corruption.
