Joe Edward Cummings, Child Pornography, Texas 2014

Denton County residents are left reeling after a shocking indictment revealed a trusted law enforcement officer’s dark secret.

Joe Edward Cummings, a 36-year-old deputy with the Denton County Sheriff’s Department, has been charged with child exploitation crimes, including transporting and possessing child pornography.

According to a federal indictment, Cummings used the internet and a cloud-based storage service to transport the illicit material between June and October 2014.

The indictment alleges that Cummings possessed digital media containing child pornography files, a serious offense that can carry a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

Cummings made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Don Bush on December 12, 2014, and faces a daunting prospect: if convicted, he could be locked away for up to two decades.

This disturbing case sheds light on the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, a scourge that has plagued the nation since 2006.

The investigation, conducted by the United States Secret Service and Texas Department of Public Safety – Texas Rangers, with assistance from the Justin Police Department, Denton County Sheriff’s Office, and the United States Marshal’s Service, is a testament to the collaboration needed to combat this heinous crime.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Marisa Miller, and the grand jury indictment is a stark reminder that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006, aims to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the internet, as well as identify and rescue victims.
