Joel William Carlson, 43, Convicted of Tax Evasion in Minnesota
A former investment advisor from Vadnais Heights, Minnesota, has been found guilty of tax evasion in a federal court. Joel William Carlson, 43, pleaded guilty to two counts of tax evasion for tax years 2010 and 2011, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Minnesota.
As reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Carlson acted as an investment advisor during 2010 and 2011, depositing client investments and his father’s funds into a personal bank account, rather than investing them as promised. He then spent the money on personal items and lied to his clients about the existence of their investments.
According to court documents, Carlson failed to file personal income tax returns for tax years 2010 and 2011, and also failed to timely file returns for tax years 2005 through 2007. As a result, the IRS filed a federal tax lien against him for approximately $495,000.
As part of his guilty plea, Carlson agreed to pay $1,239,735.35 in restitution to the IRS, in addition to paying restitution to his investment fraud victims and his father. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracy L. Perzel prosecuted the case.
U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger thanked the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigations for conducting the investigation. “The IRS enforces the nation’s tax laws, but also takes particular interest in cases where someone, for their own personal benefit, has taken what belonged to others,” said Special Agent in Charge Kelly R. Jackson of the IRS Criminal Investigation St. Paul Field Office.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of tax compliance and the consequences of tax evasion. Carlson’s guilty plea and restitution agreement bring an end to a lengthy investigation and prosecution.
