Four bodies, two suspects, and a shocking decision. Joey Pedersen, along with co-defendant Holly Ann Grigsby, stands accused of four brutal murders in 2011.
The victims include David Jones ‘Red’ Pedersen, Leslie Mae ‘Dee Dee’ Pedersen, Cody Faye Myers, and Reginald Alan Clark. Their lives were cut short in a senseless act of violence.
US Attorney Amanda Marshall announced that Attorney General Eric Holder has declined to seek the death penalty against Pedersen and Grigsby. According to Marshall, the decision was made after a ‘careful and detailed consideration of all the circumstances of this case.’
A federal grand jury indicted the pair in August 2012 on racketeering and other charges, including five potential capital offenses. Trial is set for July 7, 2014, before US District Judge Ancer L. Haggerty.
An indictment is only an accusation of a crime, and a defendant should be presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. The burden of proof lies with the prosecution to prove the guilt of the accused.
The community is left to wonder why the death penalty was not pursued in this case. The decision not to seek capital punishment raises questions about the severity of the crimes and the justice system’s ability to deliver a sense of closure to the victims’ families.
The case against Pedersen and Grigsby is set to go to trial in the summer of 2014. The outcome will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the lives of those involved.
