Long-time Civil Chief of Connecticut U.S. Attorney’s Office Retires

John B. Hughes, a resident of Branford, has retired from his position as Chief of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Civil Division after serving for over 30 years.

Hughes, who joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut as a Special Assistant in February 1980, and was appointed an AUSA in November 1981, has dedicated his 40 years of service to upholding the highest standards of integrity and skill.

During his tenure, Hughes oversaw the successful defense of numerous complex medical malpractice and tort cases, and he personally litigated tribal recognition cases involving voluminous records and discovery lasting several years.

Hughes is being honored for his exceptional service and dedication to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. He has received the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys Director’s Executive Achievement Award, one of the Justice Department’s highest awards for employee performance.

Acting U.S. Attorney Leonard C. Boyle praised Hughes’ dedication, commitment, and solid grace, stating that he has instilled all members of the U.S. Attorney’s Office with a sense of reverence for their responsibilities and an appreciation for what it means to represent their fellow citizens.

With his retirement, Hughes will be remembered for his exemplary service and dedication to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The Office is charged with enforcing federal criminal laws in Connecticut and representing the federal government in civil litigation.
