Brooklyn Federal Court Hands Down 97-Month Sentence for Fentanyl Trafficker

In a significant blow to the opioid epidemic, Johnnie Monroe, also known as Nut, was sentenced to 97 months in prison for conspiring to distribute fentanyl in Brooklyn, New York.

Monroe’s crimes were linked to the overdose death of a young mother in West Virginia in April 2015. Despite this, he continued to distribute fentanyl, shipping another package of pills to West Virginia just two weeks later.

Acting United States Attorney Bridget M. Rohde said, The death of a woman in West Virginia after ingesting fentanyl pills distributed by defendant Johnnie Monroe did not deter him from shortly thereafter shipping another package of pills containing fentanyl to West Virginia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Justice have reported that drug overdoses have become the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 50. Between 2012 and 2015, fentanyl overdose deaths in West Virginia increased by more than 20 percent, according to the DEA.

Monroe’s crimes also extended to the Queensbridge community, where he supplied a significant amount of crack cocaine to street-level dealers. He was also involved in a failed armed robbery plot in Manhattan, which was foiled when the targeted victim failed to arrive at the bus station.

On December 5, 2017, Monroe was intercepted over a wiretap bragging to a co-conspirator about their plan to commit the robbery.

Monroe’s sentencing included a term of four years’ supervised release and the forfeiture of $150,000.
