A shocking case of labor law violations has surfaced in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, as JOHNNIE SANTANGELO, III, a 29-year-old resident, and OBER FARFAN BRAVO, a 34-year-old undocumented alien, have been charged with unlawful employment of aliens.
According to a bill of information filed on Thursday, May 16, 2024, SANTANGELO and BRAVO knowingly and unlawfully engaged in a pattern and practice of hiring aliens for employment, despite knowing that they were unauthorized to work in the United States.
The bill of information alleges that the duo faced a maximum term of six months incarceration and/or a fine of $3,000 for each unauthorized alien, or twice the gross loss to any person.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite stated that the bill of information is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendants must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
Polite commended the work of Homeland Security Investigations in investigating this matter, and Assistant United States Attorney David Haller is handling the prosecution.
The case against SANTANGELO and BRAVO is a stark reminder of the consequences of violating labor laws and exploiting vulnerable workers. As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this case will impact the community and the labor landscape in Louisiana.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has emphasized that this case is ongoing, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
